Last night was the first episode of the final season. I have mixed feelings. As far as season premieres go, I was left wanting more. I think they really gave away far too much in all the "sneak peeks" leading up to the airing. It felt like I already knew what was going to happen and I wasn't surprised by anything....and I've come to expect great writing and big surprises from Julian Fellows, so I was disappointed. I'll chalk it up to PBS over-hyping and trying to milk it for all it's worth in order to make some money before the series is over. Many of the story lines were wrapped up way too quickly. On seeing previews of Mary and her blackmailer, I thought surely this was a story that would carry through a couple of weeks, but all of a sudden Lord Grantham swoops in and saves the day. It wasn't even incredibly creative as he had done the exact same thing when Carson's old buddy from the Cheerful Charlies showed up begging for money. I hope this is not a recurring theme throughout the season. I realize that there is a lot of ground to cover if you are trying to tie up all the loose ends on every character, but I hate to see the integrity of the writing suffer at the expense of simply coming to "resolution". There. My two cents.
I didn't quite make my deadline. I really wanted to get this done by the time the show started. There are just two more borders to add. When I saw that there was a new border print that came out in December as part of the Dowager collection, I thought it would be perfect for the outside border. Now I have to wait on my order to arrive... Eagerly anticipating next week's show, and hoping for some surprises this time!
